50) Boss

No game in the Genesis Action 52 reminds me so much of that other Action 52 than boss.  First off, it's essentially the only 2600-style single-screen 'action' game in this set - the NES version had over a dozen of them.  Secondly, it reaches the level of incompetent boobery the NES version often did with its set of games - moving from one floor to another is as tedious and testy as it is boring, and this is more than half's of the game's gameplay.  Third, there's a damn machine gun-wielding lizard in a suit on the back of the box (as there was on the NES box since, in an ingenious move of efficiency, they used the same box art from year to year).  Hell, it may even be a complete reinterpretation of the first jaunt of lizardmen and gangsterism since the titles are the same and we see the same enemies and themes.

Any game that reminds me of Action 52 is going to remind me about all the hours I wasted with games of that name.  The hours I spent churning out this feature could've been used to take a walk where I might've stumbled upon my future wife.  Maybe I could've spent that time looking for a better job or saving a life.  After all, what can possibly be gained from this feature?  Very little.

Of course, if I were to use some of my Action 52-time for a walk, odds are greater I would get shot at with bullets than with cupid's arrows.  Odds are greater the time spent searching for a job would leave me more frustrated and less employed than my current situation on that front.  And knowing how these things usually go with me, odds are greater I would only save a life if I myself was shot at.  With bullets.  And even if this contribution is meager, who else will voluntarily put themselves through such low-levels of horror and high levels of monotony just for the people?

But I digress.  The gameplay behind Boss involves collecting the various floating dollar bills that appear on the screen while avoiding or shooting the cops and opposing fastidiously-dressed gangsters, both of the reptilian ilk.  Often times both of these forces will cross each other's paths, and one might think these opposing forces would be trying to off each other rather than simply running in one direction hoping to run into you (which would kill you) and not your bullets (which would kill them).  You, then, are a rational being and you clearly shouldn't be playing Action 52.
