10) Star Duel Another game only to be played by more than one player. And judging by the looks of this, there still be more than one more game like this remaining? Well, let's make this quick. Although I can't really properly review this thing, not having found somebody else dumb enough to play every or any Action 52 experiment, something tells me I wouldn't be missing much having done so. I also reckon to be one friend greater having not introduced them to Action 52. Basically you're alone in outer space and your goal is to kill the other living beings within view. We don't know why; Hell, if I was in this position, I would attempt to cooperate with those who might have a greater grasp on survival in those parts than I do. But what do I know? I'm just some guy who values my life. StarDuel's control pattern is the same as the one used in Darksyne, which is to say it's Asteroids with a Genesis pad. This is just about the only thing it has in common with the venerable arcade cabinet. There are no power-ups, no obstacles other than the opposition's bullets. It's just Yellow and Red and their bullets... behind that same damn scrolling space background we've seen in every other game to this point. To its credit, Star Duel does do the whole one-on-one fighter/space shooter thing, if not poorly, years before a 360 game like that would come along and totally disappoint. Come to think of it, this game is probably more like If WarTECH: Senko no Ronde was around in 1993 and made by people with some major scores against the game-playing populace to settle, we would surely have Star Duel. This game's other crowning achievement is the fact during some 'battles', there is a natural force pulling you to one side or corner of the screen. Actually a noteworthy and semi-original attribute, but annoying enough greater games don't incorporate it en masse. |
